Found wandering the streets, starving and in a terrible condition.
Hello, I'm Lady and I have the distinction of being one of the first ever
inmates of the PAWS Sanctuary.
I used to live on the streets and life was pretty hard in those days. There were
a lot of stray dogs around and as we all had to fight for what few scraps of
food we could find I was very thin and weak. I was also extremely wary and
nervous of humans because it seemed that everywhere I went I was turned away,
often having stones or even boiling water thrown at me.
However my luck changed when
I was caught and brought to the old PAWS Centre. In those days there were hardly
any facilities, certainly not like it is now at our flash new Sanctuary There
were a few other dogs and a group of very dedicated people came in every day to
look after us. To us it was Paradise because we had plenty of good food every
day, fresh water, shelter against the weather and a safe haven.
Over the years things
changed dramatically and improvements were made all the time - although on a
shoestring budget. Then in 2002 the local Town Hall evicted us from our
sanctuary! Luckily temporary homes were found for everyone (about 40 dogs at the
time!) and the Committee and volunteers performed nothing short of a miracle to
raise enough money and build a new Centre for us. It took a long time but they
made it and we now have a very high-class Sanctuary indeed.
There is still a small
band of hard-working volunteers who come in every day to clean up and play with
us, ensure we have plenty of food and fresh water and to check on our general
health. We also have full-time Wardens. (I am so happy about this as I get
frightened when they let off those banging things and because I got myself in
such a state I managed to get myself stuck, lucky for me that someone was able
to rescue me. In the old days I would have been stuck there all night until the
volunteers arrived, can you imagine! Most days an animal doctor arrives to
ensure we have all the medical attention, medicines and vaccinations we need.
I used to share a kennel
with my good friend. Henry, who had also been around for a very long time, he
has recently found a family who wanted to foster him, I think he likes it, but
it must have been a big change after all those years with me in kennels. I am
allowed more or less the run of the Centre so I never feel cooped up. In fact,
it's a very happy life indeed, although I do miss Henry a little bit.
Because I still tend to
avoid people if I can, no one has been interested in taking me home with them. I
don't mind though as I consider this my home and I've come to love and trust my
extended family of volunteers, and I really would not want to live anywhere
else! Your generosity in sponsoring me means that I can live here quite happily
for the rest of my days, knowing that I am safe and secure and need never face
the nightmare of the streets again.
