Hello! My name is Henry and I am very handsome and so pleased to be able to
write to you.
I had been living at the PAWS Sanctuary since 1999, ever since I was rescued
from a life of scavenging on the streets by one of the local vets. She had seen
me around, getting thinner and thinner apparently, and contacted PAWS to see if
they could take me in. Which of course, they did.
It was all very confusing
at first, I was not used to living with so many other dogs – do you know there
are sometimes as many as 50 dogs and puppies living here! All of them have a sad
tale to tell about their past life, but all are well looked after and soon
realise that we are so lucky to be here.
Apparently there is
something about Spanish-born dogs that makes us all very friendly and gentle and
it is rare to find a dog that bites. Of course there are personality clashes
from time to time between the dogs but the Volunteers are very careful who they
house together and try very hard to make sure that no-one gets bullied or is
feeling unhappy or miserable.
There are various enclosed
kennels with outside runs and a block of quarantine kennels which all new-comers
go to make sure that they are healthy and not give us any diseases that they
have picked up before they mix with us. I had my own special place a fine hotel
which I shared with some of the other sponsored dogs and sometimes we allowed
some other dogs to share it with us. Every day a team of hard-working Volunteers
would come in to clean up, feed, water, give any necessary medicine and
generally look after us all. Twice a week we have vets who come in and vaccinate
all the newcomers, treats any injuries or illnesses and generally checks us all
over.
It was unusual for a dog
to have been at the Sanctuary as long as I had been and there is only one other
who has been here longer, Lady, my girl-friend has been here since the very
beginning! We have a dedicated group called the Homing Committee who spend all
their time finding homes for all the dogs, puppies, cats and kittens that come
under PAWS care and they are extremely successful. Last year they found homes
for over 500 dogs and puppies! As a result most dogs only live at the kennels
for a couple of months at most before being adopted. No-one can understand why I
hadn’t been offered a home (neither could I!) but, thanks to the PAWS policy of
never putting a healthy dog to sleep, I continued to live there and was very
happy.
THEN WAG MY TAIL and call
me “lucky”, at last after all these years I now have a foster home, with a
family ! I found it a bit strange, and of course I had to train my new family
and the children, to how I like things. I think I’ve got it cracked now, Robert
and Catherine, both play ball with me forever. My new Mum talks about me all the
time and takes me everywhere. I like going in that funny thing with four huge
paws called a car. In order to pay for my keep, vaccinations, yuck etc, I hate
those needles and seeing that animal doctor, but we all should have them EVERY
YEAR, also to help PAWS to save other dogs, . I will continue to be a Sponsor
dog, which is where you come in!
Thank you so much for being my Sponsor.
