THE SANCTUARY
PAWS continues to improve the Sanctuary at Los Gallardos, Almeria.
Quarantine Kennels These have now been extended to a total of 7 instead of 3. In addition we have a Golden Girls Kennel for bitches in season.
Two double kennels have already been constructed for our Sponsored Dogs, Lady, Henry, Kayta and Rooney and also Pointers/Hunters. However, due to the generosity of one of our Dutch members, soon to be started will be the second stage of building kennels with an area especially for hunting dogs, galgos (greyhounds) and special breeds.
Two open type kennels with permanent shade. Plans are in operation to extend the existing runs and provide a third larger run to be able to allow the dogs to have more exercise.
A separate food store has been built to alleviate problems with rats and mice infestation as well as a store for our Plastic Transport boxes. This was necessary to stop deterioration by the sun.
THE CATTERY is well on its way to completion, although this is only the basic shell until we can rqise funds for the fitting out and for the fencing. Incorporated in this is the food/cleaning materials storeroom also an Infirmary and treatment room for both dogs and cats. Until we have a heavier electrical supply and water supply for these buildings they cannot be put into commission. We also need this heavier electrical supply for the existing kennels and quarantine and additional lighting. A Dutch Benefactor has given us a donation towards this and for fitting out the Infirmary and Treatment Room, We are in urgent need of funds to complete the Cattery - can you help?
An overflow Tank to take up the extra water/sewage had to be constructed.
Although construction work is still ongoing we have tried and continue to try to make the Centre more attractive. A special collection was made towards this aim and we now have a hedge of siempre verde (evergreen hedging) around the perimeter fencing which will provide privacy and help to stop some of the wind. Six lemon trees have been planted alongside the first block of kennels, these are not only attractive but are also a deterrent against mosquitos.
We also have a few oleander just outside the Centre gates. If you have any hardy plants the Sanctuary will be grateful to receive them. Please come and visit our dogs and see things for yourselves.
